My American City: Los Angeles

I believe that Los Angeles is destined to become the most important city in this country, if not in the world." Henry F. Huntington, 1920
Its hard to find the adjectives that could fully describe Los Angeles, but my city is amazing. The people, the food, the fashion, the culture. Its been a blessing to have grown up here and there are some guidelines that every Angeleno should know about this remarkable place:

  1. Learn about the different neighborhoods. Downtown kids should hit the westside and westsiders should venture east. Downtown has a bunch of hidden gems, the valley has its spots, and Malibu / Venice speaks for themselves.
  2. Learn how to speak Spanish...It just makes life way easier.
  3. Everything comes back in style in LA. Stick to being yourself and let bandwagon hitch on to you.
  4. Believe it or not but we actually have a subway here. Use it when you can, especially the Surfliner.
  5. Nightlife: Avoid bottle service and drink top shelf liquor at home (the only reason why men get it is because they don't have a good guy / female ratio and they need to feed their ego with the women trying to get free drinks). That being said if you have a date,  have them flirt with those who have mistakenly purchased bottle service and have them bring you free drinks. Bypass the self-involved promoters and just get to know the venue's staff.
  6. Find yourself a beach that's hard to get to and tell no one about it.
  7. This is a world city so speak to your fellow Angelenos.
  8. As for sports, you should be a Dodger and Laker fan. If you're into hockey, it's the Kings. Liking the Angels or Clippers doesn't make you indie. You'll choose between USC and UCLA. If you like being winner in basketball and science, you'll choose UCLA. If you like being a winner at football and life, you'll go with USC.
  9. Visit San Diego and San Francisco but represent your city well...never stop exploring.
  10. California is a privileged, not a right.
